Can I get on my soapbox for just a minute? 😊
Nonprofit does NOT mean your organization shouldn't make a profit.
A nonprofit is still a business.
It has employees to pay.
Bills to cover.
Facilities to maintain.
And a mission that requires funding.
The biggest distinction is what happens to the money left over.
In a for-profit business, earnings may be distributed to owners.
In a nonprofit, those earnings remain in the organization to support its mission.
That's why I believe Christian schools should intentionally budget for a surplus.
Not because making money is the goal.
But because financial strength makes the mission sustainable.
There are certainly times when spending accumulated reserves makes sense—especially when funding has been intentionally set aside for a specific purpose.
But consistently operating at a loss isn't a sustainable strategy.
Something to think about:
Is your school's budget designed to build financial strength—or simply get through another year?
If you'd like help developing a budget that supports your mission for years to come, let's talk.
